Cover

To cover the spread is to win a Point Spread wager. The bookmaker assigns a handicap to level an uneven contest: the favourite is marked with a minus figure and must win by more than that margin, while the underdog carries a plus figure and need only lose by fewer points than the spread, or win outright, for a bet on them to succeed. A team can therefore win the actual game yet fail to cover, or lose the game and still cover — the spread, not the scoreboard result, decides the bet. Worked example: a football team is favoured at -6.5. To cover, they must win by seven or more; a six-point win means a bet on them loses despite the team winning the match. Their opponent at +6.5 covers by losing by six or fewer, or by winning. Where the spread is a whole number, say -7, an exact seven-point victory is a Push and stakes are refunded, which is why books often hang half-point spreads to eliminate ties. Covering matters because spread betting is priced to be roughly even-money on each side, usually at around -110 in American Odds, with the bookmaker's Vig built in, so beating the spread consistently is what separates winning bettors from losing ones. The common mistake is conflating a team being good with a team covering: strong favourites frequently fail to cover because the spread already accounts for their superiority, and public money piled on the favourite can push the line further still.
