Value Bet

A value bet exists whenever the odds a bookmaker offers are longer than your own carefully assessed probability of the outcome. It is the single concept that underpins all sustainable winning in betting: you are not trying to predict winners, you are trying to find prices that are too generous relative to the true chance. If your estimate of an outcome's probability, converted to fair odds, is shorter than the price on offer, the bet has value regardless of whether that particular bet wins or loses. Worked example: you judge Team A to have a 60% chance of winning, which corresponds to fair odds of about 1.67 (1 ÷ 0.60). The bookmaker offers 2.00, a price that implies only a 50% chance (1 ÷ 2.00). Because 2.00 is longer than your fair 1.67, the bet carries positive expected value. Numerically, staking £10 gives an EV of (0.60 × £20) − £10 = £12 − £10 = £2 of expected profit per bet, even though you will still lose it 40% of the time. Expected value is positive whenever true probability × decimal odds is greater than 1 (here 0.60 × 2.00 = 1.20). Why it matters: only positive-EV betting, repeated over a large sample and staked sensibly, overcomes the bookmaker's margin in the long run. The common mistake is confusing a likely winner with a value bet. A heavy favourite at stingy odds can be terrible value, while an underdog at a generous price can be excellent value. The hard part is estimating true probability accurately and honestly; a flawed estimate manufactures phantom value. Combine value selection with disciplined staking via the Kelly criterion.
