Shoe

A shoe is the device that holds multiple decks of cards and from which the dealer draws cards during play in blackjack and baccarat.

A shoe is the box-shaped device that holds multiple shuffled decks from which a dealer draws cards in games such as blackjack and baccarat. Most blackjack tables deal from a six- or eight-deck shoe, while baccarat commonly uses eight decks. The shoe was introduced to speed up dealing, prevent the dealer from manipulating cards, and make the game harder to beat by Card Counting, because spreading the cards across many decks shrinks the impact any single card has on the running count. Worked example of why deck count matters: in a single-deck game there are four aces among 52 cards, so each ace represents about 7.7% of the pack and removing one shifts the composition sharply. In an eight-deck shoe there are 32 aces among 416 cards, still 7.7% by proportion, but the absence of any one ace barely moves the true count. This dilution is exactly why casinos favour large shoes — it flattens the swings a counter could exploit and protects the House Edge. The shoe matters because it sets the conditions for advantage play and for ordinary strategy alike. A common caveat: many shoes are now continuous shuffling machines, which return played cards to the deck after every round, eliminating any meaningful count and making strategies that rely on deck depletion useless. Players hoping to gain even a slim edge through counting need a cut-card shoe dealt deep into the decks, not a continuous shuffler. For the recreational player the shoe changes little; correct Basic Strategy remains the right approach regardless of how many decks the shoe holds.
