In sports betting, "action" means a wager is officially live and will count toward settlement. A bet is said to "have action" once the bookmaker has accepted it and the qualifying conditions are met. If an event is cancelled or postponed, a bet with "no action" is voided and the stake returned, whereas a bet specified as "action" stands regardless of certain changes. The clearest illustration is baseball, where the identity of the starting pitcher heavily influences the line. When placing a bet you typically choose between two settings. "Listed pitcher" means your wager is void (no action, stake returned) if either named starter is changed before first pitch.
