Buy Points

Buying points means paying extra juice — accepting a worse price — in exchange for moving a point spread or total a chosen amount in your favour. Sportsbooks typically let you buy in half-point or full-point increments, shifting the line to a number you prefer at the cost of a higher vig on the bet. Worked example: a favourite is listed at -3 at the standard price of -110. You judge -3 too risky because a 3-point margin is common, so you buy the half-point to -2.5, with the price moving from -110 to roughly -130. Now your team need only win by 3 or more (rather than by 4 or more, since -3 could have pushed). You have bought protection against the exact-3 push, but you must now stake $130 to win $100 instead of $110. Why it matters: buying points is most valuable when crossing a "key number" — a margin of victory that occurs disproportionately often. In American football the most important key numbers are 3 and 7, the two most frequent winning margins, because so many games are decided by a field goal or a touchdown. Moving a spread from -3.5 to -3, or onto and through 7, can meaningfully raise your win probability. The trade-off is the heart of the decision: the extra cost of the higher juice must be justified by the increase in winning chances. Buying a half-point off a meaningless number (say from -8 to -7.5) usually overpays for little benefit, whereas buying onto or off 3 or 7 can be worth the premium. Common mistake: routinely buying points for a feeling of safety without regard to whether you are crossing a key number, which steadily inflates the vig you pay for marginal gains.
