Double

Sports betting

A double is a bet combining two selections. Both must win for the payout to be triggered. The odds are multiplied together.

A double is the simplest multi-selection wager, combining two picks into a single bet where both selections must win for any return. It sits one step beyond a single bet and below an Accumulator, which requires four or more legs. The defining feature is that the two prices are multiplied together, so the potential return grows faster than the risk feels, but the flip side is all-or-nothing settlement: if either leg loses, the entire stake is lost, with no partial payout for getting one right. Worked example: you back two football teams, one at decimal odds of 2.00 and the other at 3.00, with a 10 stake. The combined price is 2.00 x 3.00 = 6.00, so a winning double returns 6.00 x 10 = 60, of which 50 is profit. Compare that with placing two separate 5 singles: even if both win, the singles return 5 x 2.00 = 10 and 5 x 3.00 = 15, totalling 25, far less than the double's 60 — but the singles let you collect on one winner while the other loses, whereas the double collects nothing unless both come in. Doubles matter because they step up reward over singles without the steep risk of a long accumulator, making them a popular entry point into combination betting. The common mistake is underestimating how quickly compounding probability erodes the chance of success: two selections each with a genuine 50% chance combine to just 0.50 x 0.50 = 25% for both to land, so the larger return is compensation for a markedly lower strike rate. A further caveat is that the bookmaker's margin, the Vig, is embedded in each leg and therefore compounded across the double. Doubles are sound for backing two confident selections, but they are not a shortcut to easy profit.
