Wager

Sports betting

A wager is another word for a bet — the act of risking money on the outcome of an event in the hope of winning a larger amount.

A wager is synonymous with a bet: the act of risking money on the predicted outcome of an uncertain event. The word is used broadly across every form of gambling — sports betting, casino table games, slots and poker — to describe any sum placed at risk on a result that is not yet known. In legal and regulatory writing, 'wager' is frequently the formal term, appearing in gambling legislation and licence conditions where 'bet' would read too colloquially. Worked example: staking £20 on a football team at decimal odds of 2.50 is a wager; so is placing £5 on red at roulette, or committing chips to a poker pot. In each case the defining elements are the same — consideration (money at stake), an uncertain outcome and a prize or return if you are correct. The term also drives the maths of bonuses: a 'wagering requirement' of 30× on a £100 bonus means £3,000 must be wagered — actively staked, not merely deposited — before winnings can be withdrawn. Why it matters: because 'wager' is the formal, all-encompassing term, it is the one used to define what counts as gambling for licensing, taxation and responsible-gambling purposes, and the one that anchors bonus terms. The common point of confusion is between the amount wagered and the amount lost. Total wagered (sometimes called turnover or 'action') can be many times your net result, because the same money is staked, won and re-staked repeatedly. A £50 deposit can generate hundreds of pounds of wagering without a corresponding loss. Track turnover and net position separately, and only ever wager what you can afford to lose. Compare with the stake, action and wagering requirements.
