Cold Streak

A cold streak is an extended run of losses, a stretch in which results break against the player more harshly than average probability would suggest over a short horizon. Cold streaks are an unavoidable feature of any game with randomness; even a strategy carrying positive expected value will pass through painful losing sequences purely because of Variance. The streak is a property of small samples, not a force acting on the game. Worked example: betting on a fair coin to land heads at even money, the chance of losing five flips in a row is 0.5 raised to the power of five, which is 1 in 32, or about 3.1%. Across a long evening of hundreds of flips, such a five-loss run is not unusual; it is statistically expected to occur repeatedly. Nothing about those past losses changes the next flip, which remains exactly 50%. The coin has no memory, and neither does a roulette wheel, a slot, or a shuffled shoe. Cold streaks matter because of how players react to them. The dangerous error is the Gambler's Fallacy — believing a loss is now overdue to be corrected by a win — which fuels chasing, where the player raises stakes to recoup losses quickly, exactly the impulse the Martingale system exploits and exactly how bankrolls are destroyed. In games of independent trials, a cold streak carries no information about future outcomes; raising your bet does not improve your odds and only increases the amount at risk. The responsible response is to stick to predetermined stake sizes, respect your Bankroll limits, and recognise that the cure for a cold streak is not bigger bets but patience or stopping. If chasing losses feels compelling, that is a cue to set a deposit limit or take a break.
