Bet Max

The "Bet Max" button on slot machines and video poker games places the largest permitted bet across all active paylines in a single click, sparing the player from manually setting line count and coin value each spin. It is a convenience control, but on certain games it carries a consequence that makes it strategically important. The critical case is jackpots and bonus features that are only available, or only paid in full, when the maximum bet is staked. This is most associated with some progressive slots and many video-poker pay tables. Worked example from video poker: a standard 9/6 Jacks or Better machine pays the royal flush at 250-for-1 on bets of one to four coins, but jumps to 800-for-1 when five coins (the maximum) are bet. On a £1 coin, hitting a royal pays £1,000 for a four-coin bet but £4,000 for the five-coin maximum. Betting one coin short of max therefore sacrifices the single most valuable payout, and that disproportionate top-end jackpot is exactly what makes max-coin play optimal on these machines. Why it matters: on games with a jackpot premium for max bet, betting below maximum can mean a jackpot-triggering result pays only a fraction of its potential, or a progressive jackpot does not qualify at all.
