Multiplier

A multiplier is a game feature that multiplies any win it applies to by a stated factor. Multipliers appear in base spins, free-spin rounds and bonus features, with common values of 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x, though some games reach far higher. The multiplier does not change which symbols land; it scales the payout of whatever win occurs while it is active. Worked example: you land a line win worth 40 during a free-spins round that carries a 3x multiplier. The win is multiplied to 40 x 3 = 120. In games with progressive or cascading multipliers, the factor climbs with each consecutive win — perhaps starting at 1x and stepping up to 2x, 3x and beyond on each successive cascade within a single spin. In that structure, a run of four cascades might pay a small win at 1x, then larger wins at 2x, 3x and 4x as the meter builds, which is where the headline payouts in such titles come from. Why it matters: multipliers are the main driver of the large wins that define high-variance slots, and they are usually concentrated in bonus rounds, which is why the bonus feature, not the base game, accounts for most of a slot's big-win potential. A common misconception is that an active multiplier improves your chances of winning; it only enlarges wins that already happen, leaving the underlying hit frequency unchanged.
