Futures

Sports betting

Futures bets are long-term wagers on events that will be decided in the future — such as who wins a league title or championship.

A futures bet is a wager on an outcome that will not be settled until some future point, typically the end of a season or tournament. Common examples include the league champion, the Super Bowl winner, the season MVP and the winner of a golf major. Prices are published before the season and move continually as results, injuries and betting volume reshape each contender's chances. Worked example: you back a team at 12.00 to win the title before the season starts, an Implied Probability of about 8.3%. A $50 stake returns $600 if they win. As they climb the table the price shortens, and if they reach the closing stages you might Hedge — backing a rival — to lock in a profit whatever happens. Futures matter because early prices are often longer than in-season ones, rewarding those who commit before the market firms up. The drawbacks are that your stake is tied up for months and the selection must stay competitive throughout; one long injury can sink the bet. In racing, the related Ante-Post market adds another risk — if your selection does not run, the stake is usually lost unless each-way or non-runner terms apply. Compare with Ante-Post betting, the Hedge and outright markets, and weigh the locked-up stake against the better price.
