Burn Card

Casino

A burn card is the top card discarded by the dealer before dealing, to protect against cheating and reduce the chance of marked cards being exploited.

In casino card games such as blackjack and baccarat, a burn card is the top card of the shoe that the dealer removes and discards face-down before dealing a new round or at the start of a shoe. The card is taken out of play without its value being shown to anyone at the table. The practice serves two protective purposes. First, it guards against any player gaining an advantage from a card whose identity might have become known — for example a card glimpsed during the cut, or one that has been subtly marked. Second, it disrupts attempts to track or predict the very next card off the top of the shoe. In many blackjack procedures, after the cut a card is burned before the first hand of the shoe is dealt. Worked example: a fresh eight-deck shoe is loaded and cut. Before the opening hand, the dealer slides the top card straight into the discard tray face-down. No one sees it; it simply leaves the deck. Play then begins with the following card, so any information that might have attached to that top card is rendered useless. Why it matters: burning is a small but deliberate integrity measure. It is one of several physical safeguards — alongside the cut, the discard tray and the shoe itself — designed to keep the game honest and the outcome unpredictable. Common misconception: that burning meaningfully changes a player's odds or can be exploited. It does not and cannot in any practical sense; it is a security ritual, not a strategic factor. For ordinary players the burn card has no bearing on how a hand should be played. Compare to: Shoe, Baccarat.
