Handicap
Sports bettingHandicap betting explained: virtual head starts that level lopsided matchups and raise odds.
A handicap bet gives one team a virtual advantage or disadvantage in goals, points or games to even out a mismatch. A −1 handicap means the favourite must win by more than one; a +1 means the underdog can lose by less than one, draw or win and still cover. The effect is to lengthen the odds on a strong favourite by demanding a clear margin of victory.
Worked example: in a three-way European handicap, Team A is −1 and Team B is +1, with a handicap draw as the third outcome. If A wins 2-0, the adjusted score is 1-0 and the A −1 bet wins. If A wins 1-0, the adjusted score is 0-0, so the handicap draw wins and both the −1 and +1 bets lose. If A wins by three or more, A −1 still wins comfortably.
Handicaps matter because they turn a lopsided fixture into a more balanced, better-priced market.
The common mistake is confusing this three-way European Handicap — whole numbers, with a handicap draw possible — with the Asian Handicap, which uses fractional lines such as −0.5 or −1.5 to remove the draw entirely.
