Dynamic Currency Conversion

What is Dynamic Currency Conversion?

Being offered your own currency at the point of payment. The convenience is real, the exchange rate is set by the merchant's side, and it is usually worse.

What it means in practice

Dynamic currency conversion, usually shortened to DCC, is the option to be charged in your home currency when paying a merchant that prices in another one. Instead of your bank converting the amount at its own rate, the merchant's payment provider converts it first and charges you a figure already in your currency. The pitch is certainty: you see exactly what you will pay before you confirm, in units you understand. That part is true. What is also true is that the rate used is chosen by the provider doing the conversion, not by your bank, and it typically carries a margin on top of the interbank rate. Card scheme rules require the margin to be disclosed, so the number is usually on the screen somewhere — it is rarely prominent. In gambling this appears at deposit and sometimes at withdrawal, and it stacks with the other conversion that may already be happening. If your account currency differs from the currency a game or a table settles in, that is a second conversion, applied separately. Two conversions on one round trip is common and each one takes its margin. The practical rule is the same one that applies at a card terminal abroad: if you are offered a choice, declining DCC and letting your own bank convert is usually the cheaper of the two, because your bank's margin is generally smaller than the merchant side's. The exception is a bank with a large foreign-transaction fee of its own, which is worth checking once rather than guessing at every deposit.

Why it matters

A definition like this one decides what an offer is actually worth. The same wording turns up in bonus terms, on payment pages and in game rules, and it is usually where a promotion’s real cost is hiding — so it is worth reading an operator’s own terms with this meaning in mind rather than the marketing above them.

You must be of legal gambling age where you live — 18 in most markets, 19 or 21 in others. Understanding a term does not make an outcome more likely: casino games are built to return less than they take over time. Set deposit and time limits before you play.
