What is Middling?

Middling is a betting strategy in which you back both sides of the same game at different point spreads or totals, so that if the final result lands in the gap between your two numbers, both wagers win. If the result falls outside that gap, only one bet wins and the other loses, typically leaving you with a small loss equal to the vig. The technique exploits line movement: you place the first bet, wait for the market to shift, then bet the other side at a more favourable number, creating a "middle" you hope the game will settle inside. Worked example: you bet the New York over 44.5 points at -110, staking £110 to win £100. The total later climbs to 47.5, so you bet the under 47.5 at -110, also staking £110. If the game finishes with exactly 45, 46 or 47 combined points, both bets win: you collect £200 and stake £220, for a £20 net loss on the losing juice minus... in fact both slips cash, netting roughly £180 profit after the two £110 stakes. If the total lands outside 45-47, one side wins and one loses, costing you only the vig, about £10. You risk a small, known amount to chase a large, low-probability double payout. For affiliates and bettors, middling rewards patience and line-shopping across multiple sportsbooks, since capturing a wide gap usually means grabbing an early number at one book and a moved number at another. The wider the middle and the closer it sits to key numbers, the better the expected value.
