Chip

Casino

Casino chips are physical tokens used in place of real money at casino table games. Different colors represent different denominations.

Casino chips are standardised tokens used in place of cash at table games such as blackjack, roulette, and baccarat. Each colour represents a fixed denomination, and while exact values vary by property, a common scheme is white = 1, red = 5, green = 25, black = 100, and purple = 500. Using chips rather than handling cash speeds up dealing, lets the dealer and surveillance read bet sizes at a glance, and keeps the table orderly. Worked example: at a blackjack table you hand the dealer 200 in cash and receive eight green chips at 25 each, since 8 x 25 = 200. If you then win an even-money hand staking a single green chip, the dealer pays you one matching 25 chip, leaving you with your returned stake plus 25 in profit. Higher-value chips used by serious players are sometimes called plaques. Chips matter because they psychologically separate the player from real money, which is convenient for play but can blunt awareness of spending — the central caveat. A 25 chip is still 25, and a stack that feels like game pieces is real bankroll. Modern chips embed RFID tags so the casino can track movement, detect counterfeits, and value bets automatically for comp calculations (see Comp). Online casinos display virtual chip representations that behave identically. The common mistake is letting colourful tokens loosen your discipline; anchor decisions to your Bankroll in currency terms, not chip count, and colour up to larger denominations only when you are ready to leave.
