What is Burn Card?

In community-card poker such as Texas Hold'em and Omaha, the dealer "burns" a card before revealing each set of community cards — discarding the top card of the deck face-down into the muck without showing its value. Standard procedure burns one card before the flop, one before the turn and one before the river, so three cards are burned over the course of a hand that reaches the river. The purpose is integrity. Burning protects against information leaking from the top of the deck: if a card has become marked, scuffed or was briefly exposed during dealing, the player who might recognise it gains nothing because that card is removed rather than turned into a community card. It is a defence against both accidental exposure and deliberate cheating. Worked example: the pre-flop betting concludes. The dealer takes the top card and places it face-down in the discard pile, then deals the next three cards as the flop. Before the turn, another single card is burned, then the turn card is dealt; the same again before the river. At showdown, three burn cards sit unseen in the muck, having played no part in anyone's hand. Why it matters: in a game of imperfect information, denying any player foreknowledge of the next community card is essential to fairness. Burning is a long-standing safeguard that keeps live poker honest. Common misconception: that the burn card affects which cards "should" have come, or that it can be read to gain an edge. It cannot — the burned card is random and concealed, and it has no effect on strategy or odds for the players at the table.
