What is Chip Leader?

The chip leader is the tournament player holding the largest chip stack at a given moment. Chips in a tournament are not redeemable for cash at face value, so their worth is positional: a commanding stack lets the leader apply pressure that shorter stacks cannot answer without risking elimination. This leverage — threatening an opponent's tournament life — is the chip leader's central weapon, especially as the field thins and pay jumps loom. Worked example: with ten players left and one short stack clinging to ten big blinds, the chip leader sitting on eighty big blinds can open-raise relentlessly. The short stack must either fold and bleed down or commit everything with a marginal hand, because calling and losing means going home. The leader risks only a fraction of their stack on each confrontation while the short stack risks survival, an asymmetry quantified by the Independent Chip Model (ICM), which converts chip counts into real-money equity. Being chip leader matters because it multiplies fold equity and lets a player dictate the table, but it carries a crucial caveat: chips won late are worth less per unit than chips already held, because tournament payouts are top-heavy and survival has value.
