Donk Bet

A donk bet, also called a donk lead, is when a player who is out of position leads into the previous betting round's aggressor rather than checking to them. The standard sequence has the out-of-position player check to the pre-flop raiser, giving that raiser the chance to make a Continuation Bet; a donk bet breaks that script by betting out first. The name comes from donkey, a derogatory term for a weak player, because historically the move was associated with inexperienced players betting into strength without a plan. Worked example: you defend the Big Blind pre-flop and call a raise, putting you out of position for the rest of the hand. The flop comes in a way that connects strongly with the range of hands you would defend from the blind but misses the raiser's typical range. Instead of checking, you bet 40 into a 100 pot — a donk lead — denying the raiser the free continuation bet they expected and beginning to build the pot on a texture that favours you. The small sizing keeps the bet cheap to make and hard to attack, while still seizing initiative on a board that suits your hand more than theirs. Donk betting matters because modern solver analysis has rehabilitated what was once dismissed as a beginner's error: on board textures where the out-of-position player's range is stronger than the aggressor's, a small donk lead is part of optimal play. The common mistake is donk betting indiscriminately — leading on dry boards that favour the raiser's range, or using large sizings that telegraph the hand. Good donk bets are selective, usually small, and reserved for wet or connected boards that hit the caller's range. Used carelessly the move still deserves its old reputation; used with reason it is a legitimate, if advanced, tool.
