Flop

The flop is the first three community cards, dealt face-up together in the centre of the table after the pre-flop betting round in Texas Hold'em and Omaha. It is the single largest shift in hand equity, because more information is revealed in one moment than on any later street, and post-flop play is where most of poker's skill and money lie. Worked example: you hold A-K and the flop comes K-9-4 with three different suits (a rainbow board). You have flopped top pair with the best possible kicker, and as the pre-flop raiser you would often make a Continuation Bet to press your advantage. By contrast, if you held two hearts and exactly two hearts appeared, you would have a flush draw worth roughly 35% to complete by the river — nine outs, two cards to come. The flop matters because it defines the texture of the hand: dry boards favour the pre-flop aggressor, while wet, connected boards help the caller and demand caution. The common mistake is overvaluing one pair on coordinated boards where straights and flushes loom, and ignoring how board texture changes the right line.
