What is GTO?

Game Theory Optimal (GTO) poker is a balanced, theoretically unexploitable strategy. A GTO player mixes value bets and bluffs in precisely the right proportions, and defends at the right frequencies, so that no opponent can gain by deviating — whether by always folding or always calling. Originally solved for simple heads-up spots, GTO has been extended to fuller games through solver software such as PioSOLVER and GTO+. Worked example: on the river with a polarised range, a pot-sized bet lays the caller 2-to-1, so they need 33% equity to break even. To make them exactly indifferent, you bluff one-third of the time — roughly one bluff for every two value bets. Hold that ratio and your opponent cannot profit by calling or folding more often. Against a player who never folds, you abandon the balance and bet value only — that is the Exploitative adjustment. GTO matters as a baseline that cannot be beaten and a reference point for understanding why your own play might be exploitable. The common mistake is applying rigid GTO against weak, predictable fields, where deviating to exploit obvious leaks wins far more, and treating GTO as a buzzword rather than a tool.
