What is Fold?

To fold is to discard your hand and give up any claim to the pot. Once folded, you cannot re-enter the hand or recover chips already committed. Knowing when to fold is every bit as important as knowing when to bet, because over-calling — paying off bets with hands that are probably beaten — is one of the most common and costly leaks in poker. Worked example: you hold A-J and raise, only to face a three-bet and then a four-bet from a tight player whose four-betting range is essentially QQ+ and A-K. A-J looks strong, but it is dominated by almost everything that is putting in this much money, so folding saves you a large pot you would usually lose. Disciplined folds like this, against obvious strength, quietly preserve a bankroll. Folding matters because chips saved are worth exactly as much as chips won, and the ability to release a good-looking but losing hand is a hallmark of winning players. The common mistake is the opposite reflex — refusing to fold top pair to clear aggression, or calling a river bet purely out of curiosity. Both bleed money over time.
