What is Early Position?

Early position (EP) refers to the first players to act after the blinds in a full-ring game — usually the small blind, big blind and UTG (under the gun) and the seats immediately to their left. Because these players must act before seeing what anyone else does, they carry the greatest information disadvantage and must therefore play a tighter, stronger range of starting hands. Worked example: at a nine-handed table, a disciplined UTG player might open only around 12-15% of hands — big pairs, strong Broadway hands such as A-K and A-Q, and a few suited connectors. The same player on the button might open 40% or more. A hand like K-9 suited that is comfortably profitable in late position becomes a clear fold UTG, because so many players remain who can wake up with a stronger holding and put you in tough spots out of position. This matters because position is one of poker's largest structural edges: acting last on every post-flop street lets you control pot size and gather information. Acting first surrenders that edge. The most common early-position mistake is playing too many speculative or dominated hands — weak aces, offsuit Broadways — which then get squeezed or end up out of position after the Flop.
