What is Hole Cards?

Hole cards are the private cards dealt face-down to each player at the start of a hand — the information only you can see. In Texas Hold'em each player receives exactly two; in Omaha, four. Combined with the shared Board at showdown, they form the best possible five-card hand, but until then they are your exclusive edge over opponents. Worked example: in Hold'em you are dealt the A and K of spades, and the flop comes Q-J-2 with two spades. You are holding a royal-flush draw plus two overcards, and your opponents cannot see any of it — your advantage is purely informational. In Omaha, where you hold four hole cards, you must use exactly two of them with three board cards; you cannot play one or three. Hole cards matter because they are the only hidden information you control, and protecting them — not exposing or carelessly mucking them — is basic table discipline. The most common mistake is an Omaha beginner's error: trying to "play five cards" or leaning on a single ace in hand for a flush. The rule is strict — exactly two hole cards and three from the board.
