What is Muck?

To muck is to discard cards face-down without revealing them. The term covers two situations. First, when a player folds, they push their cards into the discard pile — the muck — surrendering any claim to the pot. Second, at showdown, a player whose hand has been beaten may choose to muck rather than expose their cards, keeping their holding secret and giving opponents no information about how they played the hand. Worked example: the river betting is complete and two players remain. The first to act turns over two pair. The second player, holding only a missed draw, elects to muck face-down rather than show the losing hand. They forfeit the pot but reveal nothing about their range, which has value over a long session against observant opponents. House rules vary: in some cardrooms a player who has been called must show if they wish to claim the pot, while a beaten hand can be mucked unseen. In most online environments, losing hands at showdown are mucked automatically unless the player opts to show. Why it matters: choosing when to muck and when to show is part of information management at the table. The common mistake is needlessly showing a winning or bluffing hand out of pride, which hands opponents free reads on your tendencies. A subtler error is mucking a hand at showdown before confirming you have lost — once cards touch the muck they are usually dead and irretrievable, even if they would have won.
