What is Overpair?

An overpair is a pocket pair in your hand that ranks higher than every card showing on the board, giving you a made hand stronger than any top pair an opponent can hold. For example, pocket kings on a Q-7-3 flop is an overpair because both your kings beat the highest board card, the queen. The concept applies only when you hold a pocket pair; a single card in hand that outranks the board makes an overcard, not an overpair. Overpairs are premium but not invincible. On a coordinated or high board, hands like sets, two pair, and completed straights or flushes routinely beat them, so how aggressively you play an overpair should track the board texture, position, and your opponent's tendencies. A dry, disconnected flop favours fast value betting; a wet, connected one calls for caution when facing heavy resistance. Worked example: you hold pocket aces and the flop comes 9-6-2 rainbow, giving you the top overpair. Against a single opponent holding two random overcards such as K-Q, you are roughly an 88% favourite to win by the river. If a raise goes in and the pot is 200 chips with a 100-chip call to see the turn, you are getting 3-to-1 pot odds, comfortably justified by your equity unless the action strongly signals a set. Overpairs win big pots but also lose them, so read the story the betting tells. The common mistake is treating every overpair as unbeatable and stacking off on dangerous runouts; disciplined players fold when the price and board scream a stronger hand.
