What is Top Pair?

Top pair is a poker hand in which one of your two hole cards matches the highest card currently showing on the community board, pairing you with the top card in play. It is one of the most common made hands in Texas Hold'em and Omaha, strong enough to bet for value on many boards yet vulnerable to overpairs, two-pair, sets and draws that can overtake it by the river. The strength of top pair depends heavily on your kicker, the side card that breaks ties when two players hold the same pair. Top pair top kicker, such as an ace-king when the board shows a king, is a premium holding, while top pair with a weak kicker can be a costly trap if an opponent pairs the same card with a better side card. Position, board texture and how many players saw the flop all shape how aggressively you should play it. Worked example: you hold A-K and the flop comes K-8-3 rainbow. You now have top pair top kicker, king-high with an ace kicker. Against a single random hand, you are roughly an 88 to 90 percent favourite to win at showdown. In a $1/$2 cash game with a $30 pot, a value bet of around $20 (about two-thirds pot) charges draws and worse kings while building the pot with the best hand. Why it matters: recognising when top pair is ahead versus when it is likely beaten separates disciplined players from those who pay off big rivers.
