Under the Gun

Under the gun (UTG) is the seat immediately to the left of the big blind, the player who must act first in the pre-flop betting round. It is the least desirable position at the table because everyone else acts after you: UTG opens with zero information about opponents' intentions, yet every player behind still has the chance to raise, re-raise or trap. That positional disadvantage persists, since acting early pre-flop usually means acting early on later streets too. The correct adjustment is a tight opening range. From UTG you should enter the pot only with hands strong enough to withstand action from the entire table still to come. Worked example: at a nine-handed table, opening from UTG means eight players can respond. A hand like K-J offsuit looks playable but is a trap from this seat — it is frequently dominated by the bigger kings and aces that the remaining eight can hold, and you will be out of position whenever you get called. The same K-J becomes a comfortable open from a late seat where only the blinds remain to act. Premium holdings such as A-A, K-K, Q-Q, A-K and the higher pairs are the staples of a sound UTG range. Why it matters: position is one of the largest edges in poker, and UTG is where you have the least of it, so discipline here protects your stack. The common mistake is playing too many speculative hands under the gun because they 'look nice', then bleeding chips out of position across multiple streets. Tighten up early, widen in late position. Compare with the small blind, the big blind and the stack.
