What is Trips?

Trips is three-of-a-kind in Hold'em or Omaha formed when two of the matching cards lie on the community board and the third is one of your hole cards. It is distinct from a 'set', which is three-of-a-kind made with a pocket pair plus one matching board card. The difference is concealment, and concealment is worth money: because two of the three cards in trips are visible to everyone, opponents can see the pairing on the board and are far more likely to put you on the hand, where a set stays hidden. Worked example: the board reads J-J-A and you hold J-K. You have trip jacks. But so does anyone else holding a single jack, and every player can see the paired board, so the strength is no surprise — and your kicker matters. A rival with J-A also has trip jacks but with an ace kicker, beating your king. Contrast this with holding pocket 7s on a 7-J-A board: that set of sevens is invisible, and opponents may pay you off because nothing on the board screams danger. Why it matters: trips is a strong but transparent holding. Kicker strength and board awareness determine how aggressively you should bet it, and you must respect the possibility of a better kicker or a bigger hand. The common mistake is over-valuing trips with a weak kicker and committing a full stack, only to run into the same trips with a higher side card. Bet for value, but stay alert to the kicker problem and to fuller houses on a pairing board. Compare with the nuts, a cooler and a bad beat.
