Nuts

In poker, the nuts is the best possible hand available given the current community cards on the board. It is an absolute, not a relative, term: if you hold the nuts, no other combination can beat you on that board, only tie. Reading the nuts accurately on every street — and knowing how close your own hand is to it — is one of the foundational skills of the game, because it tells you whether you are value-betting from strength or merely holding a hand that looks strong but is dominated. Worked example: the board shows K-Q-J of three different suits with no flush possible. The nuts is A-10, which makes the highest straight (A-K-Q-J-10). A player holding 10-9 also has a straight (K-Q-J-10-9), but it is the second nuts and loses to anyone with A-10. Now change the board so three cards are clubs: the nuts becomes the ace-high club flush, and that A-10 straight is suddenly beatable. The nuts shifts every time a card turns. Why it matters: 'going for the nuts' means drawing to that unbeatable hand, and when you hold it you want to extract the maximum — betting large enough to be paid but not so large that you scare opponents into folding. The common and costly mistake is misreading the board and committing chips believing you hold the nuts when a higher hand is possible — overlooking a completed flush or a higher straight.
