What is Squeeze Play?

A squeeze play is a large pre-flop re-raise made after one player has opened (raised) and at least one other player has called, using the "dead money" already in the pot to pressure everyone into folding and win the hand uncontested. The move exploits a common weakness: callers who flat an open often hold moderate hands that cannot comfortably continue against a big re-raise, while the original raiser must now worry about the caller behind them. The squeezer risks chips but leans heavily on fold equity rather than the strength of their own cards. Squeeze sizing is larger than a standard three-bet because there are more callers to price out. A useful guideline is roughly the size of the original raise plus one extra raise-size for every caller, then a bit more. It is most effective from late position or the blinds, closing the action, and works best against opponents capable of folding. Worked example: with 100 big-blind stacks, a player opens to 3 BB and two others call, building a pot of about 9.5 BB. You hold A-5 suited in the big blind and re-raise to roughly 14 BB. Both callers and the opener fold, and you scoop the 9.5 BB in dead money without seeing a flop. If your re-raise gets through even 55% of the time, this becomes a profitable bluff regardless of your holding. For affiliates and players, squeezing is a hallmark of aggressive, thinking players; overused, it becomes predictable and gets picked off by opponents who trap with strong hands.
