What is Set?

A set is a specific way of making three of a kind in Hold'em: the player holds a pocket pair, two cards of the same rank, and a third card of that rank appears on the board. Holding 7-7 and seeing a 7 fall on the flop makes a set of sevens. It is distinct from trips, where two of the three matching cards are community cards and only one is in the player's hand. That distinction is what makes a set so dangerous. Because the pair is concealed in the player's hand rather than on the board, opponents find a set extremely hard to read. A board showing a single seven gives no obvious warning that someone holds two more, so sets routinely win large pots against strong but second-best hands such as top pair or an overpair that cannot get away. This deceptive strength underpins a popular strategy known as set mining: calling a pre-flop raise with a small or medium pocket pair, hoping to flop a set and stack an opponent. The odds matter here. You will flop a set with a pocket pair only about one time in eight, roughly 11.8%, so set mining is profitable only when the potential winnings justify the call, which generally requires deep stacks and an opponent likely to pay you off. The common mistake is set mining without the implied odds to support it. Calling a large raise with a small pair when stacks are shallow, so that even hitting the set cannot win enough to compensate for the seven misses in eight, is a steady leak. Sets are premium hands, but reaching for them profitably depends on the price and the potential reward, not on the allure of the hand alone.
