River

The river is the fifth and final community card in Texas Hold'em and Omaha, dealt face up after the turn betting round is complete. It is the last card to come, so once it lands no further improvement is possible and the hand proceeds to a final round of betting and then, if more than one player remains, to Showdown. Because all five board cards are now known, river decisions are made with complete information about the available draws. There are no more outs to chase: a missed flush or straight draw is simply dead, and a hand is now either made or not. This certainty changes the nature of betting. Value bets become thinner and more precise, and bluffs become starker, since a bet on the river is no longer a Semi-Bluff with backup equity but a pure commitment one way or the other. The river is widely regarded as the highest-leverage street. Pots are at their largest, bet sizes are typically biggest, and the gap between a good and a poor decision has the greatest effect on long-run results. A correct river call that catches a bluff, or a disciplined fold against a value bet, can swing an entire session. Two mistakes recur on the river. The first is paying off too lightly, calling large bets with a mediocre hand out of curiosity when no draw can have improved against you and the betting pattern screams strength. The second is failing to value bet a strong made hand for fear of a raise, leaving money on the table. Reading the completed board and the story the betting tells is the core river skill.
