What is Prize Pool?

The total paid to winners. Whether it is guaranteed or funded by entries decides who carries the risk — and only one adds outside money.

What it means in practice

A prize pool is the total sum distributed to winners of a tournament or leaderboard, and it is either guaranteed or built from entries. The distinction decides who carries the risk. A guaranteed pool is promised regardless of how many enter, so a thin field means the operator tops it up — that is an overlay, and it is genuine value for the players present. A pool built purely from entries is redistribution: the players fund it, the operator takes a fee, and no money enters from outside. Read the payout structure alongside the headline. A large pool paying only the top three is a different proposition from the same sum spread across a hundred places, and the second is what most entrants actually experience.

Why it matters

A definition like this one decides what an offer is actually worth. The same wording turns up in bonus terms, on payment pages and in game rules, and it is usually where a promotion’s real cost is hiding — so it is worth reading an operator’s own terms with this meaning in mind rather than the marketing above them.

You must be of legal gambling age where you live — 18 in most markets, 19 or 21 in others. Understanding a term does not make an outcome more likely: casino games are built to return less than they take over time. Set deposit and time limits before you play.
