What is Pot?

The pot is the accumulated total of all chips wagered during a poker hand, including any blinds and antes posted before the cards were dealt. At showdown the player holding the best five-card hand takes the pot, or it is awarded immediately if everyone else folds. The pot is the prize every betting decision is about. When players commit different amounts because someone is all-in, the chips split into a main pot and one or more side pots. Suppose three players hold 50, 100 and 100. The short stack can only contest the portion they have matched, so a main pot of 150 forms (50 from each), and a side pot of 100 forms from the remaining 50 each of the two deeper players. The all-in player can win the main pot but not the side pot, which is contested only between those who put money into it. The size of the pot governs almost every strategic calculation. Pot Odds compare the current pot to the cost of a Call; bluff sizing is usually expressed as a fraction of the pot; and the value of a draw depends on how much the pot can reward a completed hand. A bet into a large pot threatens far more than the same bet into a small one, which is why experienced players track the pot total continuously rather than thinking only about their own stack. A common mistake is losing count of the pot and therefore misjudging both the price of a call and the leverage of a raise. Another is announcing a vague bet in no-limit games; many rooms require a clearly stated amount, and a pot-sized bet must be calculated precisely, including the call you would make first. Knowing the exact pot keeps these decisions honest.
