A satellite is a low-cost poker tournament that awards seats or paid entries into a larger, more expensive event instead of cash prizes. It lets players reach a high buy-in tournament for a fraction of the direct cost by winning their way in through a cheaper qualifier. Satellites are defined by how they pay out. Rather than a smoothly declining prize ladder, most award a flat block of identical seats: if a satellite guarantees ten seats, finishing 1st and finishing 10th win the same package, so the strategy shifts sharply near the bubble toward survival over chip accumulation. Some events run as multi-step "super satellites," where an entry-level round feeds a mid-tier round that finally feeds the target event. Worked example: a major live event has a $10,000 buy-in. An online satellite charges $109 and guarantees one seat for every $10,000 in the prize pool. If 200 players enter, the pool is roughly $20,000, so two $10,000 seats are awarded. Finishing in the top two of 200 (the top 1%) secures a package worth about 92 times the entry. Once you are certain of a seat, extra chips add nothing, so folding marginal hands is correct. Practical context: for affiliates, satellites are a strong acquisition hook because they let recreational players credibly target flagship events on a small budget, but any surplus (over-satellites awarding cash for the last non-seat spot) and travel or expense allowances should be checked in the terms. Compare with buy-in, freeroll, rebuy, ICM and the bubble.
