What is Showdown?

The showdown is the moment in a poker hand when the remaining players reveal their cards to decide the winner. It happens after the final betting round, the River in Hold'em and Omaha, provided more than one player is still in the hand. The player who can make the best five-card combination takes the Pot; if only one player remains because everyone else folded, there is no showdown and that player wins without showing anything. The order and obligations at showdown follow rules that matter in practice. In most games a player is never forced to reveal a losing hand: they may muck their cards face down and concede the pot without showing. However, if a player is called on the river, they must table their hand to claim the pot or to be eligible to win it. The usual convention is that the last aggressor, the final bettor or raiser, shows first, and the caller may then show or muck depending on whether they can win. Side pots add a wrinkle when players are all in for different amounts. Each pot is awarded to the best eligible hand among those who contributed to it, so a player all in for the main pot can win that even if a deeper-stacked rival takes a side pot with a stronger holding. The common mistake is mucking a winning hand by accident, tossing cards toward the dealer when they would in fact have won, which usually forfeits the pot irretrievably. The reverse error is tabling a losing hand unnecessarily and giving observant opponents free information about your play. Knowing when you are obliged to show, and protecting your cards until the pot is decided, is part of sound showdown etiquette.
