What is Tilt?

Tilt is a state of emotional disturbance that pushes a poker player into irrational, sub-optimal decisions — most often triggered by a bad beat, a cooler or a run of losses. A player 'on tilt' departs from sound strategy: calling too wide, bluffing far too often, chasing draws at bad prices or seeking revenge against the opponent who beat them. The danger is that tilt converts a temporary swing of variance into real, avoidable losses, because the bad play is self-inflicted rather than dealt by the cards. Worked example: you hold pocket aces, get all the money in as a roughly 80% favourite, and lose to a runner-runner flush — a textbook bad beat. The mathematically correct response is none: you played it perfectly and the long-run edge is unchanged. The tilted response is to sit down in the very next hand with 7-2 offsuit, three-bet it 'to make a point', and donate another stack. The first loss was variance; the second is a leak. Why it matters: over a career, tilt control often separates winning players from losing ones more than technical skill does. The maths only pays out if you keep playing the maths. The common mistake is failing to notice you are tilting until the damage is done. The discipline is to recognise the emotional shift early and act on it — take a break, drop stakes or quit the session entirely. Set stop-loss limits in advance, when you are calm, so the decision is already made. This is responsible-gambling practice as much as strategy.
