What is Ante?

An ante is a small, compulsory bet posted by every player before any cards are dealt, regardless of seat or position. It differs from the blinds, which only two players post each hand: the ante is paid by all players at the table, seeding the pot evenly before the action begins. Worked example: at a nine-handed table with a 100-chip ante, every player contributes 100 chips, putting 900 chips in the middle before the first card is dealt. Add blinds of 500 and 1,000 and the pot already holds 2,400 chips pre-flop. That larger starting pot is precisely the point — it rewards the aggression needed to win it and discourages players from folding hand after hand for free. A widely used modern variant is the "big blind ante", where the player in the big blind posts a single ante on behalf of the whole table. This speeds up play by removing the need to collect a chip from each seat while preserving the same pot-building effect. Why it matters: antes are introduced in tournaments as the blinds rise, typically from the middle stages onward. They steadily increase the cost of sitting passively, forcing players to contest more pots and accelerating eliminations as the field shortens. Common mistake: ignoring the ante when calculating pot odds and stealing opportunities. Because every seat has already contributed, the reward for a successful late-position raise (a "steal") is meaningfully larger than blinds alone suggest, which should widen the range of hands you are willing to open. Antes are typically small relative to the big blind but their cumulative effect on strategy is significant.
