High Card

High card is the weakest five-card hand in poker — no pair, straight, flush or anything stronger. The hand is ranked first by its highest card and then by successive kickers, so it is described as, say, "ace high". It almost never wins a showdown, because even the lowest pair beats the best high card. Worked example: you hold A-Q and your opponent holds K-J, with a board of 2-5-8-10-3 that pairs nothing for either of you. Your hand plays as ace high and beats their king high. Had you both held the same top card, the next card down (the kicker) would decide. These spots only arise when the community cards fail to combine with anyone's hole cards into a pair or better. High card matters mainly as the floor of hand strength and as the realm of bluff-catchers — marginal holdings that can only win if the opponent is bluffing. The common mistake is showing down weak high-card hands hoping they are good; against any made pair they are drawing dead. When you hold only ace high on the river, the decision is rarely whether you have the best made hand — you usually do not — but whether to call as a bluff-catcher or fold.
