What is Pit?

The pit is the staffed, protected zone on a casino floor formed by an arrangement of table games — blackjack, roulette, baccarat, craps — with their backs to a central area. Players sit or stand on the outer perimeter; the inner space is reserved for staff. Inside and above the pit, floor supervisors, the pit boss, and surveillance (the eye in the sky) monitor every hand, payout, and chip movement. The pit boss is the senior supervisor responsible for the whole pit, resolving disputes, authorising Comp ratings, and watching for irregular play. Worked example of how the pit functions: a player at a blackjack table requests a marker for 2,000. The dealer cannot issue credit, so a floor supervisor verifies the player's account from within the pit, the pit boss approves it, and the cage is notified — all without the player leaving the table. Simultaneously the supervisor rates the player's average bet and time at the table to calculate comp value based on theoretical loss. The pit matters to players mainly because it is where oversight concentrates. A common misconception is that the pit exists only to catch cheats; in practice most of its work is service and accuracy — confirming payouts, managing limits, and rating play. Another caveat: pit staff watch for advantage techniques such as Card Counting, which, while not illegal, can lead a private casino to ask a player to leave. Knowing the pit's role helps you understand who to ask for a rating, a limit increase, or a ruling, and reminds you that table play is always observed.
