What is Colour Up?

To colour up is to exchange a stack of small-denomination casino chips for fewer chips of higher value, most often when a player finishes at a table so the dealer's tray is not stripped of its lower-value chips. The dealer counts the chips down, confirms the total, calls it out for the pit supervisor, and swaps them for the largest denominations that make up the same amount. Nothing is won or lost in the process; it is purely a change of chip mix. Worked example: you leave a blackjack table holding forty green 25 chips, a total of 1,000. Rather than let you walk off with a large pile of greens the table needs, the dealer colours you up by handing over one purple 500 chip and one black 500 chip, or two blacks at 500 each, so 2 x 500 = 1,000.
