What is Croupier?

Croupier is the French-derived word for the person who runs a casino table, used most often for roulette, baccarat and craps and standard across European casinos, while English-speaking card rooms usually say dealer. At roulette the croupier spins the wheel, releases the ball, calls no more bets, marks the winning number with a dolly, clears the losing chips and pays the winners at the posted payout ratios. Handling chips accurately and quickly is a large part of the job, and busy baccarat or craps tables are staffed by several croupiers at once. They work to fixed house procedures under supervision and, in licensed markets, may need personal certification. A croupier cannot influence the result, change the odds or alter table limits, all of which are set by the operator and the rules.
