A marker is a casino line of credit that lets a rated player draw chips against a counter-signed IOU, which must be repaid within a set period after the session ends. Instead of walking into the pit with cash, an approved player signs a marker at the table and receives chips up to the credit limit the casino has assigned, based on their bankroll, playing history and verified funds. Markers are a fixture of high-roller and VIP play, extended only to patrons the casino has vetted through its credit and cage departments.
The casino grants a credit line after checking the player's assets, typically requiring a Central Credit report and bank references. Each marker is effectively a short-term, interest-free loan and a legally enforceable instrument; unpaid markers can be presented to the player's bank like a cheque and, in jurisdictions such as Nevada, non-payment can carry criminal consequences.
Worked example: a player is approved for a $50,000 credit line and signs a $20,000 marker to draw chips at a baccarat table. They win and cash out $28,000, then the cage nets the outstanding marker against their chips, returning $8,000 and clearing the debt. Had they lost, the $20,000 marker would come due within the repayment window, often 15 to 45 days, with no interest if paid on time.
For affiliates, markers rarely surface in online play but define the land-based high-roller experience your audience may ask about. Never treat casino credit as free money; a marker is a real debt, and only play within limits you can comfortably settle.
