What is Pit Boss?

A pit boss, also called a pit manager, is the senior supervisor responsible for an entire section of a casino's table-game floor, known as the pit. The role sits above the floor persons and dealers working the individual tables and below the casino shift manager, forming part of the chain of supervision that keeps the gaming floor running and compliant. The pit boss handles the decisions that exceed a dealer's authority. They approve large payouts, authorise and adjust comps for rated players, settle disputes over rulings, and investigate anything that looks irregular, from a misdeal to suspected advantage play. They also coordinate with the surveillance department, the elevated camera operation that watches the floor, when something needs a closer review. In day-to-day terms, a player typically encounters the pit boss when a hand-pay jackpot needs verifying, when requesting a credit line, or when a question about house rules cannot be resolved at the table. For higher-stakes players, the pit boss is often the person who logs their average bet and time played, the figures that drive comp eligibility and loyalty tier. A common misconception, fed by film and television, is that the pit boss can change the odds, bar winners arbitrarily, or single out lucky players for punishment. In a licensed casino their authority is bounded by published rules and gaming regulation; they can ask a suspected cheat or card counter to leave a private property, but they cannot rewrite payouts or confiscate legitimately won funds. Their core purpose is integrity and customer service, not engineering player losses.
