What is European Roulette?

European roulette, also described as single-zero roulette, is the wheel layout with 37 pockets: the numbers 1 to 36 plus a single green zero. It is the reference version in most of Europe and in the majority of online lobbies. The single zero is the whole point of the distinction: the American wheel adds a double zero for 38 pockets, which raises the house edge on nearly every bet, while the European wheel keeps it lower and constant across bet types. Payouts are unchanged — a straight-up number still pays 35 to 1 — so the difference lives entirely in the number of pockets. Some French-rules tables soften even-money losses on zero further, but the game remains a negative-expectation bet however it is played.
