Extra Places

Extra Places is an each-way promotion in which a bookmaker pays out on more finishing positions than the standard terms for a race, most often in horse racing and sometimes in golf. A normal each-way bet has two parts, a win stake and a place stake, and the place part settles on a fixed set of positions defined by the number of runners, such as the first four in a handicap of 16 or more runners at a fifth of the odds. An Extra Places offer stretches that place list, so the same race might pay the first five, six, or seven, giving your place stake more ways to return a profit at the same place fraction. Worked example: you back a horse each-way at 20/1 for GBP 5 each-way, a total outlay of GBP 10. Standard terms pay five places at 1/5 odds. Your horse finishes sixth, normally a loser, but an Extra Places promotion paying six places rescues it. The place part returns your GBP 5 stake plus GBP 5 x (20 x 1/5) = GBP 20 in winnings, so GBP 25 back on a place that would otherwise have paid nothing, turning a GBP 10 outlay into a GBP 15 net profit. For affiliates and players, Extra Places offers are strongest in large-field handicaps where outsiders regularly place, and they stack well with best-odds-guaranteed. Check the qualifying races, any maximum stake, and whether winnings pay as cash or a free bet before committing. The common mistake is assuming every race qualifies; these promotions apply only to named meetings or race types, so always confirm the terms first.
