First-Half Bet
Sports bettingA first-half bet settles only on events in the opening half of a match, such as the half-time result or first-half goals, ignoring the second half.
A first-half bet is a wager that settles solely on what happens in the opening half of a match, ignoring everything that occurs after the interval. The most common versions are the first-half result (which team leads at half-time, or whether the half is drawn) and first-half totals such as over or under a set number of goals, points or corners before the break.
Because only 45 minutes of football, or the first two quarters of basketball, count toward settlement, these markets isolate a specific phase of play. Teams that start fast, or fixtures expected to open cagily, create value that a full-match line can obscure. Bookmakers price first-half markets separately, so the odds rarely equal a simple halving of the 90-minute price.
Worked example: you back Over 1.5 first-half goals at odds of 2.50 (implied probability 40%) with a 20-euro stake. If two or more goals are scored before half-time, the bet wins and returns 50 euros, a 30-euro profit. If exactly one goal, or none, is scored in the first half, the bet loses, regardless of a goal-heavy second half. A late equaliser after the break has no bearing on the result.
For affiliates and bettors alike, the practical point is that first-half markets settle at the interval, freeing your stake earlier and letting you reassess for the second half or in-play. Always confirm the operator's void rules, since abandonments before half-time typically void the bet. Compare with second-half bet, half-time full-time, over-under and correct-score markets.
