What is KYC?

KYC (Know Your Customer) verification requires casinos to collect identity documents from players before processing large withdrawals — a regulatory requirement.

What it means in practice

KYC, or Know Your Customer, is the identity-verification process licensed casinos and bookmakers must perform to comply with anti-money-laundering regulation and to confirm that customers are of legal age. It is the operator's legal obligation to know who it is doing business with, and it underpins both fraud prevention and responsible-gambling enforcement. In practice a player is asked to submit a government-issued photo ID such as a passport or driving licence, a proof of address such as a recent utility bill or bank statement, and, for larger sums, source-of-funds documentation demonstrating where the money came from. A typical sequence: a player wins, requests a withdrawal of a few thousand units, and the cashier holds the payout pending document review, which is then released once the checks clear, usually within a day or two. Why it matters: KYC is mandatory under the major licensing regimes, including the UKGC and the MGA, and verification must generally be completed before any significant withdrawal is processed. A common and avoidable frustration is leaving verification until the moment of a big cashout, when delays feel punitive; submitting documents at sign-up smooths the experience. Players should also ensure the name and address on their account exactly match their documents, since mismatches are the most frequent cause of rejected checks. Note that source-of-funds requests are a legal requirement, not an accusation, and refusing them will halt a withdrawal. Why it matters

A definition like this one decides what an offer is actually worth. The same wording turns up in bonus terms, on payment pages and in game rules, and it is usually where a promotion’s real cost is hiding — so it is worth reading an operator’s own terms with this meaning in mind rather than the marketing above them.

You must be of legal gambling age where you live — 18 in most markets, 19 or 21 in others. Understanding a term does not make an outcome more likely: casino games are built to return less than they take over time. Set deposit and time limits before you play.
