What is Merchant of Record?

The company that legally takes your payment and appears on your statement. It is often not the brand on the website, and that matters when something goes wrong.

What it means in practice

The merchant of record is the legal entity that takes your payment, holds the acquiring relationship with the card networks, and is named on your bank statement. It is the company the payment is with, as distinct from the brand whose website you were on. In gambling these are frequently not the same. A brand may be operated under a group licence, run on a white-label platform, or process payments through a group company registered somewhere else entirely. The result is a statement line that carries an unfamiliar name — the source of a great many calls to banks reporting a transaction nobody recognises, and occasionally the source of a chargeback raised against a payment that was perfectly legitimate. The practical importance goes beyond recognising a line on a statement. The merchant of record is who a chargeback is raised against, whose terms govern the payment, and who is in scope if the brand disappears. If a casino closes, the entity that took your deposit is the one a complaint has to name, and it may be in a different country from the licence displayed in the footer. Good operators tell you this up front. The payment descriptor is usually documented in the cashier or the terms, precisely so it is recognised later. If you cannot find out who will appear on your statement before depositing, that is a small piece of information being withheld at exactly the moment it is cheapest to disclose.

Why it matters

A definition like this one decides what an offer is actually worth. The same wording turns up in bonus terms, on payment pages and in game rules, and it is usually where a promotion’s real cost is hiding — so it is worth reading an operator’s own terms with this meaning in mind rather than the marketing above them.

You must be of legal gambling age where you live — 18 in most markets, 19 or 21 in others. Understanding a term does not make an outcome more likely: casino games are built to return less than they take over time. Set deposit and time limits before you play.
